Denim originated in the French city of Nîmes, hence its name, derived from “serge de Nîmes.” Initially used for workwear, denim became popular in the 19th century when Levi Strauss began manufacturing denim jeans for miners during the California Gold Rush. Characteristics:
Denim is traditionally made from 100% cotton, though blends with elastane, polyester, or other fibers are now common to provide stretch and comfort. The indigo dye used on the warp yarns gives denim its characteristic blue color, while the weft remains white, creating the classic blue and white weave. The fabric’s toughness comes from its high thread count and the twill weave, which makes it resistant to tearing and wear.
